Understanding Mon Espace Santé in 5 minutes

What is Mon Espace Santé (MES)? What it's for, how to activate it, what it really contains, and what's still missing in 2026.

6 min read

In 2 sentences. Mon Espace Santé (MES) is a French public service launched in 2022, opened automatically for every French insured person. It brings together your digital medical record, a secure messaging service, and a catalogue of partner health applications.

What is Mon Espace Santé?

Mon Espace Santé is the official patient portal of French digital health. Created by the French health insurance system and the Agence du Numérique en Santé (ANS), it replaces and broadens the former Shared Medical Record (DMP) launched in 2004.

Since February 2022, every insured person automatically has an account, unless they explicitly opt out. You didn't ask for it, but it exists. This is a major doctrinal change: DMP was opt-in, MES is opt-out.

What your space contains

Mon Espace Santé aggregates several distinct building blocks:

  • Your medical record — the DMP equivalent: hospital discharge summaries, lab results, prescriptions, vaccinations, certificates
  • Medical profile — allergies, history, current treatments, personal data (blood type, advance directives)
  • Secure messaging — exchanges with your healthcare professionals (MSSanté)
  • Health calendar — appointments, screening reminders, vaccination reminders
  • Applications catalogue — partner health apps referenced by ANS, to which you can connect your record

How to activate and access it

Go to monespacesante.fr or download the mobile app. Log in via FranceConnect (Impôts, Ameli, La Poste, MSA) or with your social security number and a code sent by post.

If you have never activated your space, your data may already be there: all healthcare facilities have been required to feed MES since 2022. Your Covid vaccinations, recent lab results and hospital discharge summaries may be there.

What's still missing in 2026

Four years after its launch, Mon Espace Santé remains a work in progress. Several structural limits persist:

  • Incomplete feeding — many private practices and clinics still do not systematically feed in, despite the Ségur Wave 2 requirement (deadline 14 October 2026)
  • Limited historical catch-up — data prior to 2022 is not automatically imported
  • No "rich" clinical data — no native imaging (X-rays, MRI), no connected-sensor data, no detailed consultation history
  • Archive-oriented interface — MES is a filing cabinet, not a longitudinal analysis tool
  • One-way interoperability — partner apps read MES, but the reverse (pushing data from your app to MES) is more limited

The role of partner applications (like MDMC)

To fill these gaps, ANS set up a catalogue of partner applications. These applications — including My Data My Care — connect to your MES record, import the data, and enrich it:

  • Aggregation with sources outside MES (private labs, pharmacies, connected devices)
  • Longitudinal analysis and time-series visualisation
  • Granular sharing (who sees what, for how long)
  • FHIR-format portability for travel, expatriation, second opinion
  • Client-side encryption (MES does not guarantee client-side end-to-end encryption)

Key takeaway. MES is the official public base. Partner applications are the advanced-use layer. They are complementary, not competitors.

Quick FAQ

Can I delete my Mon Espace Santé account?

Yes, at any time from the settings. Your data will be kept for 10 years with the health insurance system and then erased.

Who can see my MES record?

You, and the healthcare professionals to whom you explicitly grant access. By default, no one.

Is my MES data hosted in France?

Yes, with an HDS-certified host on French soil. Under the law, no foreign authority can access it.

Can I connect My Data My Care to Mon Espace Santé?

This is planned as soon as we are listed in the MES catalogue, which is in progress. Once connected, your MDMC passport will automatically import your MES record and enrich it.
